Li studied dulcimer with his father since childhood. In 1974, he was admitted to the Anhui Provincial Art School. In 1981, he was promoted to the undergraduate course of China Conservatory of Music and studied under the famous dulcimer educator and performer Xiang Zuhua. After graduating with excellent grades, he was exempted from the examination and recommended as a graduate student.
