Lu Chunling was born in 1921 in a family of car drivers in Shanghai. At the age of 7, he learned the flute from a master cobbler and had a strong interest in flute art. When he was young, his family was poor and he made a living by riding a tricycle and being a car driver. Even so, he never gave up learning the flute and various musical activities.

When he was a teenager, he joined the folk silk and bamboo group "Ziyun National Music Club".

In 1940, he organized the "Chinese National Orchestra" with his friends.

In his youth, Lu Chunling was forced by life. He had driven a car and stepped on a tricycle; the hard work of life did not overwhelm him. In addition to using the flute to relieve the depression in his chest, he also used the convenience of driving and cycling to find teachers and friends to sharpen himself.

After the founding of New China, he became a professional musician.

In 1953, Lu Chunling participated in the preparations for the establishment of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, and has since become a solo performer of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra.

In 1976, he was transferred to teach at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

Lu Chunling is a flute player and a music educator. The students he has taught are all over the world, and many young and middle-aged flute players have been instructed by him. Some of them enjoy a certain reputation in the music circles and teaching circles at home and abroad. Such as Yu Xunfa and other performers who have a certain prestige in the flute world. He is also a prolific writer of national instrumental music. Many of the flute pieces he has arranged and composed have become frequently selected pieces by flute players and are well received by audiences.

Lu Chunling has been playing the flute for 60 years. He worked hard in the flute garden and continued to develop, forming his strong style. "Jiangnan Sizhu" is a fertile ground for Lu Chunling's bamboo flute playing art. The fresh, lively, and meaningful characteristics of Jiangnan Sizhu have become the keynote of his playing style. And he adapted Jiangnan Sizhu music into the popular flute solo.

In addition to playing, he has also composed many excellent flute repertoires over the years, such as: "Present and Past", "Good News", "Jiang Nanchun", "A Lesson at Construction Site", "On the Training Ground" and so on. As a flute player, he has visited and performed in more than 20 countries and regions, and has adapted some foreign folk songs into flute music, which has been warmly welcomed by the audience. He is an influential flute player both at home and abroad. . The dizi pieces that he has organized include "Partridge Flying", "Happy Song", "Little Cattle", "Zhonghua Liuban" and his creations such as "Present and Past" and "Happy News", which have become the repertoire of Dizi, and have been Published. Lu Chunling is one of the outstanding representatives of the Southern School of flute art in my country, and is known as the "Magic Flute" by audiences at home and abroad.

On May 29, 2017, at the "Lu Chunling Die Arts 90 Spring Concert", Lu Chunling's disciples came on stage one after another and played his most famous works. He himself put on a rose-red robe and played his favorite "Partridge Flying". On his robe was embroidered a partridge bird, which was painted by Cheng Shifa, and it was vivid. On the stage, the 97-year-old Lu Chunling still has a clear and sweet tone and agile fingering, leaving behind the ageless demeanor of the "Chinese Flute King".

Foreign exchange

Since 1954, Lu Chunling has been a friendly messenger of the Chinese people and has visited 30 countries and regions in Europe, Asia and Africa. During the visit, Lu Chunling never let go of the opportunity to ask foreign counterparts for advice, learn the national and folk music of various countries, and adapt them into flute music. These foreign folk music, through his performances, have also injected new blood, have a new style, and become a part of Lu Chunling's flute art.

Art style

The works he plays are pure, round, pure and sweet in tone, delicate in performance, and especially in control of breath. And can freely use vibrato, tremolo, calendar, beat and other retouching tunes. He has created flute pieces such as "Present and Past", "Good News", "Jiang Nanchun", "A Lesson at Construction Site" and "On the Training Ground". ", etc., have become the repertoire of Dizi. No matter in the field of flute playing or in the entire Chinese music industry, it has a pivotal position. Over half a century of flute teaching career and artistic practice, it has formed its unique genre model. The subtlety of the air, the subtlety of the fingering, and the rich timbre of his performance are widely respected by domestic and foreign music circles and bosom friends, especially in Jiangnan Sizhu.

Lu Chunling's unique style of flute art, he was greatly influenced by Kunqu Opera, and emphasized "the qi sinks into the dantian". The method of this kind of luck is that the breath relies on the strong support of the abdominal muscles and psoas muscles, so that the size of the breath can be controlled freely when playing. In addition to luck, he also pays special attention to using the upper thumb to push inward and the lower thumb to push outward to maintain the balance of the flute body, and to coordinate the distance of the damper, the tightness of the tone and the contrast of strength. Because of this, the sound he blows is beautiful and mellow, firm and full, strong but not impetuous, weak but not empty.

Secondly, Lu Chunling often uses the second overtone (that is, the twelve-degree superfluid) which is not used by others in the music he arranges and creates. Because the second overtone is played on the flute, the membrane of the flute hardly vibrates. At this time, the sound of the flute is not only pure, but also the volume is small, which is very easy to express a quiet atmosphere. In addition, in the fingering skills of decorative melody, Lu Chunling used the donated sounds and beats that are commonly used in Jiangnan Sizhu to enhance the charm of music, and paid great attention to the use of small vibrato and finger tremolo. The use of small vibrato can make the music more gorgeous and lively, and make the melody more fluent. However, the time value of the small vibrato is very short, which requires the fingers to vibrate finely and evenly, which is relatively difficult. It can be seen that Lu Chunling has worked hard on finger vibrato.

An important way to beautify and retouch the sound is to use tremolo. There are two kinds of tremolo, one is gas tremolo, and the other is that when the tremolo flute is played weakly, in order to ensure the purity of the sound, it is not suitable to use gas tremolo. In order to avoid monotony, Lu Chunling often borrows tremolo to beautify the sound. In addition, finger tremolo can be used with a single finger, or with two or three, or even five or six fingers. In addition, the finger flapping method is different, and the distance between the fingers is different from the sound hole, which will cause different effects, thus enriching the music. of expressiveness. When enjoying Lu Chunling's performance; or learning the music he composed and arranged, this should be carefully appreciated.

In December 1999, he was awarded the "Senior and Active Elite Award" in Shanghai.
