Wang Shuliang, born in 1943, is a native of Gucheng County, Hebei Province. Famous erhu performer, music educator, member of the Chinese Music Association, director of the Chinese Artists Association, vice chairman of the Chinese National Music Artists Association, and senior examiner of the national erhu test.
Since teaching in 1964, he has composed more than 220 erhu etudes and solos such as "Cut the Window Flowers", "Pipa Resentment", "Rural Scenery", "Song of Nature", "Yanzhao Xiangyin", and some of them were featured on CCTV "Son of the East" And the variety channel broadcast, some erhu works won national awards. He was awarded various titles such as Hebei Province Model Worker (1981), National Top Actor of the Ministry of Culture (1982), China's Top 100 Industry Figures (2005), and Hebei Deyi Shuangxin Artist (2011).
In 1958, he was admitted to the Hebei Provincial Art School, majoring in erhu. He studied under Zhang Shao and Professor Liu Mingyuan. He graduated in 1964 and stayed at the school to teach.
In 1960, he invented the practice method without the qin, and through more than 20 manual exercises, the efficiency of basic skills was improved; in 1962, he invented a new technique to expand the range of the erhu—the bending column method, which expanded the erhu’s inner hollow strings toward the bass. Its volume and timbre are indistinguishable from commonly used sounds, enriching the expressive power of erhu, and has been praised by experts and included in the "Chinese Music Yearbook" (1988).
In 1993, he worked with cellist Wang Lianbo to reform the erhu on the suspension column (made by Wang Lianbo), which has excellent texture, exquisite craftsmanship, grand volume and pure timbre. There are papers such as "Attempt to Expand Erhu's Sound Range by Bending Column Method", "Pingju Style" and other papers published in "People's Music" and other publications.
