Introduction to Wu Tianping(leyou)Master performer

"Leyou" is a unique national musical instrument of the Buyi nationality. In the folk, the performance and production of Leyou are often integrated. As the inheritor of Leyou from the Buyi ethnic group in Xingyi City, Wu Tianping can not only make exquisite Leyous, but also master Leyou's playing skills proficiently.

Wu Tianping, from the Bouyei nationality, was influenced by his family since he was a child, and began to get in touch with musical instruments. I started playing musical instruments at the age of twelve, and now I have been making musical instruments for nearly fifty years. Teacher Wu said: "When I was a child, I could blow a piece of music with the hollow straw of nature. As long as it is hollow, it can be made into Leyou."

Most of the Leyous in Xingyi now come from Wu Tianping. Except for Leyous, he can play and sing all kinds of national musical instruments at his fingertips.

After more than 40 years of research and production, Wu Tianping combined traditional craftsmanship with modern tools, not only boldly innovated the appearance of the musical instrument, but also made the musical instrument with good operability, which is the popularization and promotion of Leyou. Created good conditions. Wu Tianping not only mastered the production and performance of ethnic musical instruments, but also actively passed on these intangible cultural heritage to more people. His three children and several grandchildren will all play ethnic musical instruments. He patiently taught those who came to study because of his reputation, without expecting anything in return.

In May 2018, Wu Tianping was identified as "the fifth batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative project inheritors".

Leyou can pronounce (a, c1, d1, e1, g1, a1) 6 tones with a range of one octave. The pronunciation is crisp and sweet, similar to the timbre of a Western musical instrument oboe, with a strong local flavor. The playing technique is roughly similar to that of the suona, and the cyclic ventilation method is often used to make the melody played mellow and smooth, beautiful and expressive. It is mainly used to play Leyou (or Lelang) alone, a unique love song of the Bouyei people.
