double tube bau overview

double tube bau Double-pipe bawu (pinyin: shuāng guǎn bā wū) is a single-reed gas-sounding instrument of the Yi people. It is popular in Gejiu, Mengzi, Jianshui and other places in Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province.

The tube body is made of bamboo, and is made of two vertical blowing single tube Bawu with the same shape and the same pitch tied side by side. Double-pipe Bau is based on the traditional Bau, through the combination of two Bau, on the basis of not destroying the natural and most beautiful sound of Bau, to expand the range and performance of Bau. The shape of the double-pipe Bau looks like a bundle of two Bau, and there are two supervisors, so it is called the double-pipe Bau in the image. From the point of view of the sound range and playing method of a single supervisor, it is also the same as the traditional Bau. The innovation lies in the different fingering used on the two supervisors, which expands the Bau's vocal range by 3 tones.

When playing, the pipe body is placed vertically, and the two reed pipes are placed in the mouth. The index finger, middle finger and ring finger of the right hand press the upper three holes of the two pipes horizontally respectively, and the index finger, middle finger and ring finger of the left hand respectively press the lower three holes of the two pipes, and blow the air drum. The reed is pronounced according to the hole, and the range is c1-c2, which is an octave. Generally do not over blow. The sound of the double-pipe Bau is crisp and bright, and the volume is large. Often used as a soloist or to accompany folk songs and dances.
