Ma Gu Hu overview

Ma Gu Hu Maguhu (pinyin: mǎ gǔ hú) is a stringed instrument of the Zhuang people. The Zhuang people are called Ran Du and Ran Lie. It is popular in Xilin, Longlin, Tianlin, Baise, Jingxi, Debao area of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Zhuang areas in Yunnan, Hunan and other provinces.

Maguhu is a stringed instrument originating from the Xiqin type. Since the early Qing Dynasty, with the further consolidation and development of a unified multi-ethnic country, the cultural exchanges among various ethnic groups have become more frequent, and many new varieties of stringed instruments have been added.

Maguhu is called "Ran Du" and "Ran Lie" in Zhuang language. "Ran" is the collective name for the huqin, and the governor is the bone, which means the huqin made from the bones of horses, mules and oxen. Therefore, it is usually called horse bone hu or bone hu. The Zhuang language is also known as "Ran Lie" and "Ran Sen". "Column" and "Sen" both mean small size, high and sharp pronunciation. "Ran Lie" is composed of the names of a pair of young men and women in the legend. Similar in shape to Xiqin-type musical instruments, the timbre is crisp, bright, and pleasant to the ear.

The traditional horse bone hu is composed of the qin barrel, the headstock, the qin rod, the peg, the qin, the qin horse, the qin string and the qin bow.
