Satar overview

Satar Satar (pinyin: sà tā ěr) is a Uyghur bowed and stringed musical instrument. Popular in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. According to legend, it has spread in the Kashgar area of southern Xinjiang from the 14th to the 15th century, and later spread to the northern and eastern Xinjiang.

In the 1950s, Satar spread to Yining, a border town where the Kazakh people live. Now it has become popular all over Xinjiang and has become the favorite stringed instrument of the Uyghur people.

The traditional folk Satar is very similar in shape to the Uyghur strumming stringed instrument Tumbo. It looks like a long-handled water scoop. The whole body is made of mulberry wood, with a total length of 130 cm to 148 cm. The bow is a wooden bow. Horsetail bow hair, similar to a violin bow.
