Yexiao

Yexiao (pinyin: yè xiāo), alias liao, is a clarinet gas-sounding instrument of the Miao ethnic group, named after it is mostly played at night. It is popular in Leishan, Danzhai, Kaili, Majiang, Huangping, Rongjiang, and Rongshui Miao Autonomous County in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The night flute is made of a knotless thin bamboo tube. The tube is about 50 cm long, with an outer diameter of about 11 mm and an inner diameter of about 7 mm. The lower end of the tube has 4 sound holes, and the upper end is a mouthpiece for vertical blowing. On the front of the mouthpiece, there is a rectangular gap, which is used to clamp the reed. The reed is mostly made of thin bamboo or reed. Because the bamboo used is different in length and diameter, it also has high, medium, and The bass is divided into two octaves.

The timbre of Yexiao is soft, beautiful and very pleasant, similar to the Western instrument clarinet, but more delicate than bright. Its bass and mids are rounder and sweeter, while the highs are a bit shrill. Yexiao is most suitable for playing slow lyrical tunes and expressing delicate thoughts and feelings.
