Zhabuling overview

Zhabuling

Zhabuling (pinyin: zhā bù lìng), also known as ocarina, delin, Zhaling, and Liesi, is a Tibetan fringe air-sounding musical instrument, popular in the Shigatse area of the Tibet Autonomous Region and the pastoral areas of the northern Tibetan plateau.

The whole body of the zabuling is kneaded with clay, water and mud. Because it is all hand-made, the size and sound holes are different, and the pitch and sound sequence are also inconsistent.

Zabu makes the tone soft and bright, but the volume is low, and the pronunciation is slightly "woo woo". It was originally played by shepherds when grazing to play a signal sound to help grazing. Now it is mostly used for children to play and entertain themselves.
