When I was in my 10s, I joined the suona team because of love. At the age of 17 or 18, I started to learn suona by myself with my former friends. At the age of 19, I started to walk in the "Jianghu" with this skill. Today, 64-year-old Chai Yujiang leads a group of fourteen- and fifteen-year-old "friends" every day to play a harmonious movement of well-off and happy life for the villagers in the new era.

A suona relay from old to young

During the Spring Festival, Chai Yujiang, the head of the suona class in Xinzhuangzi Town, Qianxi County, was not idle. The happiest thing for him every day was to bring his "new partners" and dance with suona for the "old partners".

According to Chai Yujiang, the suona circulating in Tangshan area is also called "Tangshan Flower Blowing". It was formed during the Guangxu period of Qing Dynasty and has a history of more than 100 years. Suona is inseparable from China.

"Learn suona five tones in a positive tone and a strong sense of rhythm. In the process of playing, there are skills such as single spit, double spit, continuous spit, slide up, slide down, flower branches, and vibrato. It is not easy to play, it is not only a technical activity, but also a skill. Working hard and being able to endure hardships are the most basic requirements for learning this industry." Chai Yujiang said that at the age of 19, he set up a suona team and made a living by playing suona for happy events in eight villages.

After years of perseverance, Chai Yujiang turned the skill of making a living into a passion. For more than 40 years, he practiced for a while every day, and when someone came to study, he also taught him everything. The playmates who once grew up with Chai Yujiang are also members of the Suona team. Now, there are more "new partners" in his team, and a group of fourteen-fifteen-year-old children also learned suona from Chai Yujiang.

Talking about teaching children to learn suona, Chai Yujiang said that not only can let them put down their mobile phones and learn a craft, but also exercise their endurance, and more importantly, pass on the good things left by the older generation. To this end, Chai Yujiang has innovated many repertoires and can play classic songs and tunes that young people like. During this Spring Festival, wherever there are cultural performances, Chai Yujiang will take this group of "new partners" to perform together.
