In the past, it was mostly performed in festive festivals and temple fairs, and the annual Spring Festival to the Lantern Festival was a concentrated activity time.
Before the event starts, the president of the temple fair (selected by each village) first organizes a sacrificial event, which is called "Ye Temple": the dance team, led by the umbrella head, beats gongs and drums, blows suona, and sometimes carries it. Whole pigs, whole sheep and other offerings went to the temple to burn incense and worship the gods, praying for the gods to bless the weather, the country and the people. And kicked and beat in the temple square for a while, intended to entertain the gods. After the "Ye Temple" ended, after the eighth or ninth day of the first lunar month, the waist drum troupe started a door-to-door New Year's celebration, commonly known as "Yanmenzi".
There is a local proverb: "The gongs, drums and suonas are loud, and the stick is under the butt!" The crowd couldn't sit still. At this time, the waist drum team went to each house in turn according to the situation in the village, and performed for a while in the main courtyard and in front of the kiln. The main family believes that the waist drum team enters the hospital, beats, beats, dances, sings and sings, which can eliminate disasters and avoid disasters and keep the four seasons safe.
This is the legacy of the ancient "countryman Nuo" custom. Sometimes the two teams of waist drums meet on the way. Usually, the umbrella heads sing Yangko to each other to celebrate the New Year and give way. However, sometimes there is a situation where they do not give way to each other.
The two teams made great gongs and drums, and the sound of suona and waist drum sounded like spring thunder rolling. The drummers beat and jumped as much as they wanted, reaching a climax, the drumming paused, and the two umbrella heads appeared to sing. This is also an aspect of competition skills. Until there is a team that is chaotic first, the movements are uneven, the drum beats and formations are not unified, or the anti-song is not correct, even if they lose, they take the initiative to give way and let the winner go first.
After the "Yanmenzi" is over, the waist drum teams from neighboring villages will pay New Year's greetings to each other, visit each other, and perform exchange performances. At 15:00 on the first lunar month, the waist drum teams from all villages gathered in the square and began to compete with each other.
Drummers from all walks of life showed their skills and competed with each other, which became the climax of the waist drum performance in the year. This not only enlivened the Spring Festival entertainment activities in rural areas, but also promoted the popularization and improvement of waist drums through mutual observation and exchange of skills. "Turn the lights" (also known as "Zuan Jiuqu") will be held that night. At that time, the drums will be played in unison, the lights will flicker, and the waist drum team will lead the way. Afterwards, everyone presents a lively scene.
The activities of the waist drum troupe usually last until the seventeenth and eighteenth of the first lunar month, when the sacrifice to the God of Earth ends. After that, the villagers went to prepare for spring ploughing with peace of mind.
