Dongba is a double-reed gas-sounding instrument of the Jingpo people. "Dongba" is a transliteration of the Jingpo branch of the Jingpo ethnic group, which means a pipe flute with horns in Chinese. The Zaiwa branch language is called Biche or Bik. It is popular in Luxi, Yingjiang, Longchuan, Ruili and other places in Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province.
In the Jingpo people, when the grains are ripe, the young people also have to play the dongba in the fields.
In the funeral ceremony of Jingpo people, Dongba played a low and sad tune, accompanied by the rhythm of big and small ding-dong, to express condolences to the deceased old man. In addition, the Jingpo people also play the dongba during Chinese New Year, wedding night, eating new rice or grazing.
Jingpo custom, Dongba can be played from before the autumn harvest until after the Spring Festival, and it is no longer played during the busy spring ploughing season, and it is also taboo to play at home.
Traditional music includes "Munao Zongge", "Harvest Song", "Dongga Dance" and so on.
