The Miao suona is a folk wind instrument that Miao compatriots like to see and hear. It occupies an important position in the life of the Miao people. Whenever the Miao township is on New Year's Day, wedding celebrations and other occasions, it is played to add to the fun.
The most widely used form of performance is the two-person ensemble, in which the folk artist with higher acting skills is the forehand, leading the first sentence of the music, playing the upper octave of the suona; another artist as the deputy, playing the lower octave of the suona, Folks call it playing male and vowel, that is, the high pitch is the male sound, the low pitch is the vowel sound, and the high and low octaves cooperate with each other.
The suona music of the Miao people in western Hunan is very rich, mostly made by Miao folk artists, with distinctive local characteristics and national styles. The more famous pieces include "Hit a Horse Crossing the Bridge", "The Lady Gathered on the Sedan chair", "Goose and Goose Cry", "Falling Flowers", "Water Waves" and "Flowing Water".
