Such as grinding, such as cutting, such as learning, ingenuity to create the most beautiful sound. Speaking of the first person to make Lingnan Guqin, I have to mention teacher Chen Yimin.
In the 1980s, Mr. Chen Yimin was still a cotton factory repairman. Because of his strong hands-on ability and great interest in woodworking, he was chosen by Mr. Yang Xinlun, who was the first person in Lingnan Guqin at that time, and embarked on the road of making Guqin.
It took teacher Chen Yimin ten years from the beginning of making Guqin in 1985 to the first satisfactory Guqin in 1995. From a piece of wood to the final qin, Mr. Chen has thoroughly studied every step. Silk strings sound good but are not durable and often need to be re-tuned. Steel strings are durable and inexpensive, but their timbre is much inferior to that of silk strings. Teacher Chen Yimin changed the belly of the piano so that the guqin with steel strings can also play a rhythm close to that of silk strings.
The guqin production process is not only numerous but also very cumbersome. Every step has to be polished repeatedly. If one detail is not done well, it may affect the timbre of the guqin.
Grinding the piano is the hardest part. It needs to be smoothed to the point where there is no sandy sound. If the grinding is not good, the strings will touch the surface of the piano, and it will change to another sound when playing.
Because the guqin is too small, it is not profitable to do guqin, and not many people are willing to learn it. However, this situation has changed because of the Beijing Olympics. Guqin performance appeared at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games. Many people began to be interested in Guqin. Teacher Chen Yimin's business also flourished. Craftsmanship is passed on.
In 2008, Mr. Chen Yimin accepted his first apprenticeship, and so far he has 46 apprentices. Teacher Chen Yimin said that he will teach him his craftsmanship. As long as the apprentices learn it seriously and are willing to do it, they can be passed on from generation to generation. I hope that the Lingnan zither will be passed on from generation to generation.
