On the evening of July 2, a splendid concert of classic Guzheng works was staged in the Yangming Lecture Hall of the Confucius Institute in Guiyang. This is another stage public welfare performance specially planned by Confucius Institute. The concert invited famous guzheng players Jiang Danxi, Lu Jing, Zhou Tianli, Wu Jian, Xu Linlin and other plucked strings to perform many classic pieces, presenting an artistic feast to the audience and showing the beauty of the millennium folk music.
Guzheng, known as the "King of Music", also known as "Oriental Piano", is one of the unique and important national musical instruments in China. The famous Chinese zheng ensemble "Tian Lai Zheng Ensemble", which was invited to this concert, was established in 2000. It is one of the most influential zheng ensembles in China and the first professional guzheng ensemble established in Sichuan Province.
The performance kicked off with a song "Jinguancheng Gong and Drum" full of Sichuan flavor. As the track that won the first prize of the Gold Award for the same instrument combination in the 2021 "Dunhuang Award" Chinese National Chamber Music New Works Exhibition, it used the guzheng to interpret the sound of gongs and drums in Sichuan Opera, showing the joyful and lively scenes of Chengdu's streets and alleys.
On the stage, the four performers formed a tug-of-war with each other. By covering the strings, they created different gongs and drums tones, such as the mahjong game that the people of Shu are keen on.
At the same time, "Huanhua Language" and "Spicy Jiugongge" and other songs branded with Sichuan, led the audience to open up a new perspective. Through the folk music of Guzheng, they could appreciate the profound cultural heritage of the Land of Abundance and the diverse folk customs, and the atmosphere of the scene continued to heat up.
"We add a 'spicy' flavor to the guzheng music, so that the audience in Guiyang can see the other side of guzheng." Jiang Danxi, artistic director of Tianlai Zheng Orchestra, told reporters that the repertoire brought this time has a wide range, especially the one that reflects the life in Chengdu. Several songs show the tension of the guzheng, and look forward to igniting the enthusiasm of the audience.
Classic songs from all over the country, such as "Introduction to Cangge", "Roaring Sky - To the Earth and Songs", "Eight-faced Wind", "Nine Children's Capriccio" and "Water Lotus", set off a wave of climaxes at the scene, one after another. The colorful audio-visual scrolls unfold slowly, and the vivid musical language leads the audience to shuttle between the movement and stillness, and take the notes to appreciate the greatness of China, the beauty of the motherland and the splendor of culture.
"It's wonderful! It's fun!" said Li Lin, an audience member. Poems express their aspirations and zheng music expresses their feelings. This concert allowed me to appreciate the beauty of folk music, especially when I heard repertoires from all over the country, and the rhythm fluctuated greatly. Kudos to the performers for their superb acting skills and full of enthusiasm.
The performance ended with the red track "Yellow River", which showed the majestic mountains and rivers of the motherland, the heroic spirit of the sons and daughters of the Yellow River, and the unique spirit and pride of the Chinese nation. The audience resonated with the music and burst into applause.
