The Dong flute is a musical instrument of the Dong people. It is popular in Liping County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province, and Nanning City, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Since the 1970s, Dong folk artists, musicians and musical instrument manufacturers have continuously reformed the traditional folk flute.

Shi Guoxing, a folk artist and a famous Dong singer from Shuikou District, Liping County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province, first reformed the production of the Dong flute. The grooves, the two sides of the pad height, and the air inlet holes made of bamboo pieces are changed to not break the bamboo skin, and directly stick the bamboo pieces on the tube body, which solves the problem that the remaining 1/4 of the tube wall is easily damaged after the bamboo skin is broken. The shortcomings make the Dong flute durable.

Wu Shengang of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Song and Dance Troupe, with the assistance of Shanghai No. 1 National Musical Instrument Factory, successfully developed the reformed Dong flute, aiming at the defects of low volume, narrow range and inability to transpose the folk traditional Dong flute. This new Dong flute, on the basis of retaining the traditional Dong flute tone and playing technique, lengthened the body, added sound holes and buttons, and changed the upper mouthpiece to an independent part made of copper, which is durable and has a pure sound quality. . Between the whistle hole and the sound hole, a retractable double-layer copper pipe is added, which is convenient to adjust the length of the pipe, so that the pitch can be finely adjusted. A bell mouth is added at the lower end of the tube body, which effectively expands the volume. This reformed Dong flute extends the range to f-c3, which is convenient for transposition and timbre change. It can be used both for solo and for participating in the national band ensemble. As the performance absorbs the skills of wiping, sliding and hitting on other air-sounding instruments, it has rich artistic expression. His compositions include "The Train Enters the Dong Shanzhai" and so on.
