The production of folk musical instruments in Shanghai began in the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. In 1956, 86 folk musical instrument workshops in Shanghai merged into folk musical instrument cooperatives. In July 1958, the No. 1 Shanghai National Musical Instrument Factory was established. At the end of 1969, the No. 1 National Musical Instrument Factory was relocated to Xinzhuang Town. Through continuous development and innovation, Shanghai National Musical Instrument No. 1 Factory has become the largest production base of national musical instruments in the country. The craftsmanship of ethnic musical instruments incorporates elements such as history, color, and aesthetics, combined with techniques such as modeling, carving, painting, and inlay, and has outstanding cultural and artistic value.
In June 2009, the production skills of Shanghai national musical instruments were included in the "Second Batch of Shanghai Intangible Cultural Heritage List".
