Liu Guicun was born in a suona family, and the Liu's suona skills created by his ancestors are very famous in eastern Hebei, especially his father Liu Zhen, who is known for his sound and confidence, known as "Liu Tiezui", in eastern Hebei. Even the Northeast enjoys a high reputation.

"When I was a child, I wanted to learn how to play the trumpet, but my father didn't agree and thought I had no future. My grandfather secretly taught me how to play a little tune. Later, I took another suona artist as my teacher without my father's knowledge. Now, after my father found out, he finally agreed to let me learn this." Liu Guicun said that he still keeps the suona that his grandfather left him. It represents the inheritance of the older generation of suona artists to the younger generation, which is very precious.

As the fourth-generation descendant of Liu's suona, Liu Guicun has been fascinated by his ears and eyes since he was a child. After enlisting in the army at the age of 19, his 10-year experience as an actor in the art troupe has brought his suona performance to a higher level.

In 1976, Liu Guicun retired from the army and returned to his hometown, and was assigned to work in the Luan County Pingju Troupe. "There are many opportunities for grass-roots performances, and the performance level has gradually been well received by ordinary people and recognized by experts." Liu Guicun said.

In 1995, Liu Guicun's first album "Suona King Love Story" was published. In 2010, he was selected as the inheritor of Tangshan Municipal Intangible Cultural Heritage Suona Playing Song.

In Luanzhou, when shadow puppets and Pingju were in vogue, the suona was one of the accompaniment instruments for these two folk arts, and the masses had a broad base. However, with the development of society, popular entertainment projects are increasingly diversified, and the audience is seriously divided. Suona artists only have the opportunity to perform at rural festivals or during weddings and funerals. Therefore, fewer and fewer people learn to play suona, which makes Liu Guicun a little worried.

He changed the ancient folk trumpet handed down for thousands of years, and changed it to simple notation, making the music notation easy to understand and easier to pass down.
