Passing down Erhu skills to the younger generation

On March 23, Wei Ming received a phone call from student Hao Anyi. He explained everything from the repertoire to the tune and performance skills to the students in detail.

Wei Ming, 67, is an erhu lover. In the 1970s, he was a literary soldier in the Army Art Troupe who was responsible for playing the erhu. After changing jobs, he did not forget to play a song for his colleagues from time to time in his unit. After retiring in 2012, he had a dream - to pass on the erhu skills to the younger generation.

"Lao Wei and I have known each other for more than 30 years. He has always had a special liking for erhu. Many erhu lovers have come to learn from him. Under his guidance, several students have won good results in the competition." Good friend Liu Hai Strong admiration.

Open Wei Ming's drawer, and books of award certificates are neatly placed. Since he guided young people to learn Erhu, he has won 16 national, provincial and municipal honors and led more than 50 apprentices.

"Grandpa Wei is very serious and teaches us the skills of erhu playing for free. Every piece of music is marked carefully, for fear that we don't know where it is." Hao Anyi said.

Hao Anyi is a sixth grader in elementary school, and has been learning erhu with Wei Ming since he was 6 years old. In 2018, under the guidance of Wei Ming, Hao Anyi stood out in the National Youth Talent Spring Festival Gala Competition with a piece of "The Great Wall Capriccio", and won the first prize in the Shaanxi Division of the National Youth Talent Spring Festival Gala of CCTV "Red Star Shining" prize.

"Capriccio on the Great Wall" is divided into 4 different movements, "Xing Guanshan", "Beacon Fire Exercise", "Sacrificing to the Loyal Soul" and "Watching from a Distance", and the rhythm of each chapter is completely different. "I didn't choose this song at first, because it was too difficult. But Grandpa Wei has always encouraged me to use it to participate in the competition. During the nearly half a year of guiding me, Grandpa Wei came to practice with me every day, rain or shine, and he has a lot of his own. Elderly activities have been postponed." Hao Anyi said.

The performance of the movement of "Beacon Fire Exercise" requires a combination of hardness and softness, not only to play the scene of the beacon fire, but also to present the tragic and solemn of defending the family and defending the country. In the face of complex repertoire, Wei Ming reconsidered, marked each change clearly on the score, and gave guidance during the practice process until Hao An played every movement with ease.

"More and more children are now learning traditional Chinese musical instruments such as erhu and cucurbit flute. I also want to teach them the erhu skills without reservation." Wei Ming said that at present, he still insists on going to the students' homes to give them free guidance Erhu La playing skills to help students improve their performance level.
