As one of the most representative musical instruments in Chinese traditional music culture, the guqin has deep roots in Buddhism.
Since the end of the Qing Dynasty, Master Yunxian, a qin monk, compiled the "Quin Mu Zen Qin Pu", which became an important work of the Guangling Qin School. Others, such as Master Daxiu, Master Zhuchan, Master Genru, etc. The line of Qin monks is endless. With the mission of inheriting and promoting the excellent traditional Chinese culture, Sichuan Chengdu Wenshu Monastery holds Guqin cultural popularization activities from time to time to promote the public to improve their musical accomplishment.
In 2017, Chengdu Wenshu Monastery established the Wenshu Qin House, which aims to inherit the Chinese guqin culture, inherit the sound and rhythm of the Zen qin, and provide a platform for monks, laypeople and guqin lovers to learn and communicate. The Qinshe adheres to the concept of "strengthening quality through culture and education" in Wenshu Academy. Zeng Chengwei, the vice president of the Chinese Qin Association, a professor of Sichuan Conservatory of Music, and the representative inheritor of the Shu style Guqin, serves as the teaching director. and art open classes, which are deeply appreciated by believers and loved by traditional culture lovers. Since its establishment, the piano house has held 18 public welfare primary classes, allowing more than 1,000 music lovers to learn about Guqin and experience learning.
Every year, the Wenshu Qin House hosts the Wenshu Monastery’s Guyu Gathering, the Dragon Boat Festival Gathering, and the Mid-Autumn Festival Gathering; it also holds special music performances, such as the “Remembering Old People” Music Gathering by Famous Artists, and the Ma Changsheng Guqin Singing Concert of “Soul Music Awakens Life”.
In 2019, Wenshu Monastery held the Summer Solstice Concert. All the non-profit teaching teachers and nearly 10 well-known artists of the qin house performed together, and the 600-seat Wenshu Pavilion Concert Hall was full. In 2020, Wenshu Qinshe will hold "Traditional Culture Seminar and Guqin Elegant Collection", from "Li Sao", "Drunken Fisherman Singing Evening", "Autumn Water", to "Three Lanes of Plum Blossoms" and "Flowing Water", 11 Guqin solo, ensemble and ensemble pieces , so that the audience can appreciate the beauty of Guqin and the unique charm of Shu style Guqin. "The concert's interpretation of traditional classics and modern innovative qin pieces enables the audience to appreciate the 'ancient rhyme' and 'new ideas' of the guqin," said Master Zongxing, abbot of Wenshu Monastery.
"A bald pen, calligraphy and zen heart. Writing life is a good relationship to the world." Wenshu Academy of Calligraphy and Painting hired well-known calligraphy and painting professors to teach classes, and successively opened classes of Chinese painting, seal calligraphy, official script, etc., and organized "weekend copying of scriptures" activities every week. It provides opportunities for calligraphy and painting lovers, believers and tourists to get in-depth contact with traditional culture. The Calligraphy and Painting Institute recruits more than 500 students every year, holds several activities such as teacher and student calligraphy and painting exhibitions, writing Spring Festival couplets, and participates in Wenshu Monastery meditation camp, experience camp, volunteer annual meeting, Buddha's birthday party, nursing home exchange and other cultural and charitable activities. Art as a medium to promote traditional culture to the public.
At the end of 2021, the teachers and students of the Academy of Painting and Calligraphy will gather together to hold the activity of "Writing Spring Festival Couplets to Welcome New Years". Hundreds of Spring Festival couplets and blessing characters will be written on the spot, and the New Year's blessings of the Year of the Tiger will be delivered to believers and tourists in advance. In mid-March this year, the calligraphy and painting exhibition of "Going for Good, Feeling at ease" was held in Wenshu Monastery. More than 50 famous calligraphers and painters from Sichuan Province created excellent works, and selected more than 20 students' calligraphy and painting works to participate in the exhibition. It not only brings visual enjoyment to the public, but also a beneficial attempt for artists to communicate and learn together, to observe the younger generation, and to inherit traditional culture.
Over the years, the Academy of Painting and Calligraphy has cultivated a group of students with basic painting and calligraphy skills and a certain appreciation of traditional art. The Academy of Calligraphy and Painting continues to carry out various public welfare cultural activities, allowing more people to come into contact with and love traditional culture, which is an important part of Wenshu Monastery's practice of "Human Buddhism".
