Chinese classical aesthetics advocates that the spirit, life and vitality of the whole universe should be displayed in the communication between the mind and the world. The Painting of Rivers and Mountains over a Thousand Miles, painted by Wang Ximeng, a painter of the Northern Song Dynasty, is characterized by undulating peaks, houses and floating figures, which create a vivid and exquisite artistic conception with a variety of sights. This green landscape painting is exactly the memory of the spirit of Chinese classical aesthetics. Inspired by this, Zhao Lin, the composer, created a symphonic poem "Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains" based on the "Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains", interweaving classical and modern charm, to express mountains and waters with music and express his mind and spirit with mountains and waters. On the evening of September 24, the work was played in Beijing Poly Theatre. The conductor Yu Long joined hands with the China Philharmonic Orchestra to perform together with the sheng player Wu Tong, the pipa player Zhao Cong, the erhu player Lu Yiwen, the piano player He Ming, the soprano singer Fang Qiong, and the bamboo flute player Dai Ya.
The work is divided into six movements. The orchestra and the sheng, pipa, erhu, piano, flute and xiao "talk" one after another, and the national soprano axis "highlights". When expressing the core of Chinese aesthetic spirit, the author uses the form of combination of symphony and folk music to freely imagine and present in this space. The expression of artistic conception is not confined to the form, not in one move, but in the overall "vivid charm". In the ingenious layout, simple and natural harmony is used to make the work complete in about 65 minutes, and extend the spirit of life meaning and interest value in the limited space.
The symphonic poem "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains" begins with the movement "Clouds fly up, and the sky is thousands of miles away". It is powerful and forceful, and outlines a panoramic landscape painting. This is a pure orchestral movement, which has the function of breaking the topic and opening the article. The theme materials used in this movement will appear repeatedly in other movements, making the whole work present logic and unity in chapters with different attitudes.
Then the second movement, "Water Cloud Dissolves Yang", added the solo instrument Sheng. The continuous and long sound of the Sheng is heard, the background of the looming symphony, the clear embellishment of the piano, and the interweaving of dots and lines, such as floating light, flowing spring ding dong. Wu Tong's body moves with the music when playing, which is light and dexterous. The picture is like dance and Tai Chi, with coherent breath and soft and slow movements. In this work, the Sheng and the orchestra are integrated as if they are in harmony, which fully reflects the aesthetic pursuit of "harmony between man and nature, vivid charm".
The third movement, "Moonline Gully Pine Wind - Langran. Qingyuan. Who plays? Loud in the empty mountain", is just like its name. The soft and controlled sound of the pipa and the orchestra creates a scene under the moon in the valley. The flute sounds like a bird, breaking the silence and adding a bit of fun. After that, the music suddenly entered the Allegro. The pipa's technique of sweeping the strings and twisting the strings struggled with the band, demonstrating its rigid nature. Although "the tree wants to be quiet but the wind does not stop", it still needs to "hit three thousand li with water". The third part reappears and belongs to tranquility.
The temperament of erhu, a musical instrument, seems to have a natural monologue sense, which conveys the thoughts in my heart. The fourth movement, "Thousand Stacks of Magnificent", gives erhu a large solo space. The orchestra either sets off the erhu or creates momentum to echo it, one after another. This ratio is moderate and harmonious. The melody line of erhu is always clear. The music can not only express feelings and introspection, but also have a sense of movement and energy.
The fifth movement, in the form of piano and orchestra, presents an unstoppable picture of head held high and fast marching with internal rhythm in the repetitive melody, such as "ten thousand horses are circling and mountains are going east". The speed in the middle is slowing down, the melody line is long, and the momentum is magnificent, but there are still repetitions, and the atmosphere is turbulent. The last part slowed down, attributed to quiet, attributed to peace, showing the sudden relief of "returning without wind, rain or sunshine".
Finally, the composer adopted the form of soprano, flute and orchestra, and ended with a song "Ten thousand mountains into the sea - all people return to their hearts, and the world is one family". The lyrics are derived from Meng Haoran, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, "Watching Lushan Mountain in Pengli Lake". "Taixu was born with a halo of the moon, and the boat was aware of the wind...". The author sings according to the sound, and the music and words fit naturally and tactfully. Fang Qiong's timbre characteristics, moderate volume opening and closing, and appropriate emotional control perfectly interpret this work. The timbre of the bass flute is ethereal and has a sense of texture, presenting a gloomy and primitive classical aesthetic connotation, interwoven with the female voice alternately. With the great timbre of the orchestra, the taste of life is sublimated, and the whole article is ended in high spirits.
Zhao Lin used the combination of symphony and folk music to continue the "linear" characteristics of traditional Chinese art, grasp the classical charm, and reflect the contemporary aesthetic. His rich writing skills and understanding of traditional culture make The Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains a revelation and expression in the course of accumulation, which is easy to understand and listen to. This is not the "Chinese style" aestheticism in general understanding. The beautiful melody alone is not enough to support it, but the deeper meaning excavation. Music can retain its charm and tranquility in the opening and closing. "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains" adopts the mode of collective contract of 23 orchestras, which undoubtedly further expands the influence and communication of the work at home and abroad. At present, there are 20 concert tours planned for this work. This global online live broadcast in Beijing is believed to have been heard by more people. It also deserves to be heard by more people.
