Yi nationality suona, Yi nationality double-reed air-sounding musical instrument. In Yi language, they are called Mohe, Mohong, Bailai, Zenai, etc. Because the whole body is made of wood, it is also known as the Yi wooden suona. The shape is more simple and bigger than the ordinary copper bowl suona. It consists of a reed whistle, a core, a tube body and a horn.
In order to save effort and air when playing the suona, and let more air be poured into the whistle to blow the whistle, an air blocking plate must be placed at the junction of the small tube and the duck feather tube. Air blocking plates are mostly made of very thin wooden boards, and also made of bone chips or horns, but very few. Generally round, its diameter is about 1 inch. A small hole should be drilled in the center of the air blocking plate, and the size of the hole should be just enough to insert the duck feather tube. Otherwise, the gas blocking plate will slide under the small tube, and the gas blocking effect of the gas blocking plate will be lost.
Blowing the suona requires constant use of air. Blowing continuously all night long, people's lips will be tired, numb and unable to close, and the air will be forced into the whistle. At this time, the air blocking plate can make up for the lips. If you are not tired enough, block the places where the lips are not closed properly and the air leaks, so that the limited air in the mouth can be blown into the suona through the whistle. In this way, the exhaled air is not wasted, and the suona music can be played with water. It seems to be uninterrupted, making people sound pleasant and comfortable.
