On November 8, Wang Fujian, the conductor, directed the Wuxi National Orchestra, and Deng Jiandong, the artistic director of the orchestra, performed the first performance of the national symphonic sound painting "Dream of Jiangnan" as an erhu solo in the Great Hall of the People of Wuxi. The concert is composed of the first "Wu Feng Mei Yun" and the second "Beautiful Taihu Lake". It is a masterpiece of the 2022 Taihu Lake Culture and Art Season, including six original national orchestral works by six composers: Chen Siang's "River of the Universiade", Kong Zhixuan's "Song of Liang Xi", Xu Jianqiang's "Melody of Mei", Wang Aikang's "Wu Feng Drum Music" Wang Jianmin's "The Second Erhu Concerto - Scenery of Taihu Lake" and Wang Yunfei's national orchestral music "Dream of Jiangnan". The play depicts the beautiful scenery of Jiangnan and the local customs of Wuxi. It is a lyric sound and picture that presents a tribute to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and praises Wuxi. At the same time, we can also observe the new trend and trend of contemporary national orchestral music creation. The whole concert works and performance level are excellent.
Jiangnan culture, which has been accumulated for thousands of years, is undoubtedly the best subject for the creation of contemporary national orchestral music. Composers have devoted themselves to the creation with sincere emotion, providing both a way to solve the problem and innovative strategies. The six works all adopt the title concept, select the melodic elements of Jiangnan folk songs, especially the combination of Xi Opera and contemporary composition techniques into the creation. The Wu Wind Drum Music also incorporates the performance characteristics of southern Jiangsu blowing and southern bamboo. Wuxi is close to the Yangtze River in the north and the Taihu Lake in the east. The Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal passes through the city. The Second Erhu Concerto - Scenery of Taihu Lake, Dream of Jiangnan, and River of the Universiade take the Grand Canal and Taihu Lake as themes, respectively, to interweave into magnificent and colorful Jiangnan symphonic music and paintings, reflecting the composer's admiration for the new era.
On the basis of paying attention to the audibility of melody, composers integrate contemporary composition techniques to "process", "reshape" and "recreate" the original tune. The Second Erhu Concerto - Scenery of Taihu Lake, Liangxi Music Poems, Wufeng Drum Music and River of the Universiade and other works not only directly cite Jiangnan folk songs such as Wuxi Scenery, but also use motivation development and other methods to expand the tone according to the needs of the idea, which makes it easier for ordinary listeners to identify and accept aesthetically. From "Melody of Plum", we can not only feel the original flavor of Jiangnan folk music, but also feel the composer's personalized artistic means. In some paragraphs of works such as Dream of the South of the Yangtze River, the composer no longer uses any specific national music of the South of the Yangtze River, but tries to reflect the composer's original music with a broad flavor of the South of the Yangtze River, to eulogize the humanistic feelings, the spirit of the times and the charm of the South of the Yangtze River.
Whether it is the extension effect and fluctuation of the strength of the strengthened timbre in the Melody of Plum, the Music Poems of Liangxi, or the interweaving and integration of the national orchestra and human voice in the Dream of the South of the Yangtze River, you can feel the conductor and the band's meticulous handling and interpretation of the music works. In "The Second Erhu Concerto - Scenery of Taihu Lake", a series of exquisite notes flow from Deng Jiandong's bow. The "old partner" of composer Wang Jianmin and performer Deng Jiandong is undoubtedly one of the musicians who are most familiar with the performance and expressiveness of national orchestral music and erhu. They are fellow residents of Wuxi and familiar with Jiangnan folk songs. Deng Jiandong's performance can be described as riding against the wind and breaking the waves.
It has only been more than two years since the formal establishment of Wuxi National Orchestra in January 2020. Most of its members come from major professional colleges and universities, with an average age of no more than 30. The orchestra is full of youth and vitality. The orchestra is new, and the repertoire it plays is also new. The orchestra attaches importance to the commission creation system, and the works it has performed since its establishment are all commissioned works. In the new era and new journey, the Wuxi National Orchestra responded to the call of the times, rooted in the local culture of Wuxi, and explored a road of innovation for national orchestral music that not only has the charm of Jiangnan, but also conforms to contemporary aesthetics.
