In Shuicha Township, Taihe County, Xiao Huiwen, a music teacher born in the 1990s, often leads students to practice flute among bamboo forests and streams. Music is like a seed, flowing along the forest stream and taking root in the hearts of children... A few days ago, Xiao Huiwen won the 25th Jiangxi Youth May Fourth Medal.
In September 2017, 25-year-old Xiao Huiwen returned to his hometown Jiangxi from Guangdong to serve as a music teacher at the Central Primary School in Shuicha Township, Taihe County. However, Xiao Huiwen's first music class did not go well. He seemed to be poured cold water on his head. Purely teaching music theory knowledge does not work for this group of children with weak music foundation. After the class, Xiao Huiwen began to reflect, "How can music teaching enter the hearts of rural children?" After a few thoughts, Xiao Huiwen, who had learned to play bamboo flute since childhood, began to think about adding bamboo flute to teaching.
In October 2020, Xiao Huiwen selected more than 30 students from the class to set up a bamboo flute interest class, with regular classes every week and intensive training during holidays. The children are like a blank sheet of paper. Xiao Huiwen patiently started to teach the basic skills of qi, lips, tongue and fingers. Little by little, the children gradually knocked on the door of playing the bamboo flute.
In Xiao Huiwen's opinion, if children can play and make bamboo flutes, understand how bamboo turns into bamboo flutes, and understand the process and hardships involved, they will cherish the bamboo flutes in their hands more, and they will be able to taste better. The melodious flavor of the flute. There is a large bamboo forest in the back mountain of the school. Xiao Huiwen used local materials, bought tools to make bamboo flutes, and took advantage of the holidays to go to other places to learn the arts. Bamboo picking, shaping, punching, tuning, polishing... Bamboo flute production is very elegant, and many thoughts will arise in the process. For example, repeated tuning can enhance the cognition and judgment of good timbre. Xiao Huiwen sees these reflections as a good opportunity to understand music theory, and actively guides children to experience it.
From playing the bamboo flute to making the bamboo flute, to explaining the bamboo culture, the children's hearts gradually became enriched. Thanks to Xiao Huiwen's efforts, more than 200 of the school's more than 600 students have learned to play simple music on the bamboo flute. In the melodious flute blowing in the wind, the children's faces were filled with confident smiles.
"I teach children to play the bamboo flute, not because I want them to play the flute professionally, but to improve their musical literacy, so that they can perceive the charm of music and see a wider world. I think this kind of thing is very meaningful. I will continue to persevere." Xiao Huiwen said.
