Wan Xiang was born into a family of carpenters in Jiangling County, Jingzhou City, Hubei Province. His father, Wan Fanghua, and his uncle, Wan Fangde, are both local traditional carpenters with exquisite craftsmanship. When his father, Wan Fanghua, was working in Shashi in the 1970s, he met Mr. Xiang Shengjie, a guqin player in Jingzhou. The skills were passed on to his younger brother Wan Fangde. Wan Fangde loved music and was obsessed with the making and playing of the guqin. Wan Xiang started from junior high school and used the winter and summer vacations to follow his uncle Wan Fangde to try to make and play the guqin.

Wan Xiang worked for China International Trust and Investment Corporation Shenzhen Company after graduating from university in July 1991. In September 1993, during a business trip from Shenzhen to Beijing, I met Mr. Tian Shuangkun, a famous qin master of the Northern School of China. In October 1997, I traveled to Hong Kong and got acquainted with Mr. Tang Jianyuan, a famous guqin player in Hong Kong through a friend’s introduction.
