With the gradual drop in temperature, the cold and dry winter is a special test for wooden instruments such as the pipa. In order to ensure that the pipa can still maintain its best condition and sound quality in the cold season, it is essential to take proper maintenance measures. Here are some important suggestions for winter maintenance of pipa.
First, control humidity
As a wooden instrument, the pipa is very sensitive to changes in ambient humidity. Too dry air will cause the wood to shrink, possibly causing cracking or deformation. The ideal humidity range is usually between 40% and 60%. If indoor heating causes the air to be particularly dry in the winter, consider using a humidifier to increase the humidity, or placing a bowl of water in the room to raise the humidity naturally. At the same time, avoid directly exposing the pipa to a heat source, such as next to the radiator, so as not to cause local water loss too quickly.
Second, the appropriate temperature
Extreme cold can also have a detrimental effect on the pipa. Try to keep the temperature of the place where the pipa is stored stable, do not let the temperature change dramatically. Generally speaking, the room temperature is maintained at 18-25 degrees Celsius is more ideal. When taking the lute out, the instrument should be adapted to the outside temperature in advance to avoid suddenly entering a warm room from an extremely cold environment, and vice versa, which can reduce the risk of damage caused by temperature differences.
Third, cleaning and protection
Wipe the surface of the lute regularly with a soft, clean cloth to remove dust and stains, but be careful not to use cleaning supplies containing chemical solvents, as these may damage the finish. For the string part, the grease residue on the fingers should be cleaned up in time after playing to prevent long-term accumulation from affecting the timbre. In addition, when not in use, it is best to put on a special protective cover to prevent accidental collisions and scratches.
Fourth, check and adjust
Before the onset of winter, it is recommended to have a professional technician perform a full inspection of the lute, including but not limited to tuning, checking structural integrity, and repairing any minor problems. This not only ensures the good performance of the pipa throughout the winter, but also facilitates the timely detection of potential problems and solutions. If you find any abnormal conditions during the winter, such as sound changes, buttons are not working, etc., you should seek professional help in time.
5. Appropriate use
Even in winter, the lute should be used in moderation. Moderate playing can help the instrument to "activate" and help maintain the stability of its internal structure. However, pay attention to the cleaning of the hands before and after each performance, and store the pipa properly in a suitable environment immediately after the performance.
