Based on A Bing's Erhu Solo, "Erquan Reflecting the Moon", participated in the creation of the pipa and orchestra concerto "Little Sisters on the Prairie", and worked hard for the orchestral score of the modern ballet "Red Detachment of Women", and authored "Wu Zuqiang Anthology - Xia Hui Ji" and many other collections... In the history of modern Chinese music, Wu Zuqiang is a name that is difficult to skip. Sadly, just today, this outstanding composer, music educator, and former president of the Central Conservatory of Music passed away at the age of 94.

Wu Zuqiang, a native of Wujin, Jiangsu, was born in Beijing in 1927. He served as Secretary of the Party Group of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, President of the Central Conservatory of Music, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Musicians Association, and Executive Vice Chairman of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles. From 1952 to 1958, Wu Zuqiang graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in China and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Music in Moscow successively.

Among his most important works are the string quartet, the symphonic sound painting "On the Land of the Motherland", the oratorio "Fighting with the Flood", and the music of the dance drama "The Mermaid" with Du Mingxin. In addition, he has adapted the traditional music "Erquan Reflecting the Moon" and "Listening to the Pine" into a string ensemble, "Jianhe Shui" into an erhu and orchestra ensemble, and "Spring River Flower Moon Night" into a pipa and an orchestra concerto.

Wu Zuqiang passed away at the age of 94, and his life was closely related to music

Wu Zuqiang's creative style is rigorous, and he is good at developing musical thoughts from the laws of music and art. On the one hand, he absorbs the excellent traditions of Western European and Russian classical music composition techniques, and on the other hand, he conducts beneficial explorations on national styles and national characteristics, and strives to organically combine these two aspects to create musical works full of national style. He also combined the conception of Chinese national and folk music with the techniques of symphony music in the form of concertos or ensembles of national instruments and symphony orchestras.

The original song of "Erquan Yingyue" embodies A Bing's moving story, and the string ensemble "Erquan Yingyue" adapted and created by Wu Zuqiang also has a twist. From 1972 to 1974, Wu Zuqiang served as the leader of the composition group of the Central Orchestra. At that time, he proposed to sort out the "long history of national music". Wu Zuqiang, at the suggestion of Li Delun, adapted and composed the string ensemble "Erquan Reflecting the Moon", which combined the erhu piece "Erhu". The combination of the melody of Spring Reflection and the expression of string ensemble has resulted in the string ensemble Erquan Yingyue.

During the audition of the work, the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra of the United States visited China to perform. Ormandi suddenly proposed to listen to Chinese works, and the Central Orchestra performed the newly arranged string ensemble "Erquan Yingyue" under the command of Li Delun. After the music was played, Ormandi was so excited that he immediately asked Li Delun for the score and said that he would bring it to the United States to perform. After approval, the score for the string ensemble "Erquan Reflecting the Moon" crossed the ocean and arrived in the United States with Ormandy.

Regrettably, even though the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra has arranged the work in the schedule for the next season, "Erquan Reflecting the Moon" failed to play after all. A reporter from The New York Times who came to China with a fee and was fortunate to listen to the performance of "Erquan Reflecting the Moon" highly praised this concerto - the work is very beautiful, exuding a touch of melancholy, and a little sweet, at the same time The Yellow River Piano Concerto is a stark contrast.

Wu Zuqiang, who is good at the organic integration of folk music and Western symphony, has not only successfully adapted many folk music works, but also made breakthroughs in dance drama music. The music of the dance drama "The Mermaid" and the ballet "The Red Detachment of Women" for which he was the music designer, presided over the creation and one of the composers has become a classic of Chinese dance drama music with a high degree of nationality and symphony. His symphony works express national emotions with Western orchestral techniques, achieve a high degree of unity of artistic form and ideological connotation, and reflect the soul of the nation.

Wu Zuqiang was born in a family of culture. His father Wu Ying was a famous cultural relic archaeologist and one of the founders of the Palace Museum. His eldest brother Wu Zuguang is a master of literature and drama. Wu Zuqiang has inherited his father's artistic temperament and organizational talent since he was a child, and showed them successively in his music career, making him and his eldest brother a generation of "double gems" in the cultural and art circles of the Republic.

The gentle and elegant Wu Zuqiang has a strong heart and a clear distinction between good and evil. He is a person who dares to love and hate, and hate evil like hatred. In art, he has a clear view of right and wrong. When talking about his wonderful passages in the ballet "The Red Detachment of Women" that were later edited and changed beyond recognition by the "Gang of Four", he often slapped the case with anger. Wu Zuqiang's life is closely related to music, and his life trajectory is a parallel line with the development of music culture in New China.
