Bamboo leaf flute, a single-reed gas-sounding instrument of the Dong nationality, is called Baben in Dong language, which means a flute with bamboo leaves as a spring, so it is also referred to as leaf flute.
When playing the bamboo leaf flute, the pipe body is placed vertically, the middle finger and index finger of the left press the first and second holes respectively, and the middle finger and index finger of the right hand are respectively pressed by the third and fourth holes. Generally, the following five sounds can be blown: g1, a1, c2, d2, e2 or c2, d2, f2, g2, a2.
Bamboo leaf flute has a soft and beautiful tone, and is mostly used for solo performances, and does not participate in the ensemble of other Dong nationality instruments. Players often play alone in the mountains or fields for self-entertainment. There is no fixed tune, and most folk songs or minor tunes are played, and sometimes they are played improvisationally.
