The five-month flute is a musical instrument called Pai Yao, a branch of the Yao ethnic group. Yao language means cutting bamboo to make flute and blowing flute in May, hence the name.
When playing the May flute, the tube body is placed upright, the ring finger, middle finger, and index finger of the left hand press the first, second, and third holes respectively, and the ring finger, middle finger, and index finger of the right hand press the fourth, fifth, and sixth holes respectively. The upper lip is placed at the cork at the head of the tube, and the lower lip wraps the half-moon mouthpiece. The circulatory ventilation method is used to play. The tone of the drum is d1-g1, and the octave range of flat blowing is often used. By overblowing, the range can reach two octaves.
The tone of Mayxiao's flat blow is soft and graceful, while the super blow tone is thin and sharp. Often used for solo. The playing technique is the same as that of the general flute, and he is good at playing beautiful and lyrical tunes.
Solo pieces include "May Song", "May Bachelor Song" and "December Song".
