Tuhu is tuned according to the relationship of fifths as a, e1 or d1, a1, and the ensemble range is a-a2, with two octaves; the range a-a1 is commonly used for Zhuang opera accompaniment. The pronunciation is firm and the tone is rich, and it belongs to the alto-stringed instrument. It is often used in the ensemble of Zhuang "eight-tone" bands or as the accompaniment of Zhuang opera, and it can also be played for self-entertainment at ordinary times.
When two Tuhus are used in the band, the tuning is different, commonly known as "zhenghu" or "anti-hu". Tuhu is often used in national festivals or folk festive occasions, but it does not have a special tune. Tuhu is good at playing smooth, lyrical and euphemistic melodies.
