Hulusheng is a single-reed gas-sounding instrument of Yi, Lahu, Wa, Lisu, Hani, Li, Naxi, Nu, Pumi, Miao and other ethnic groups. The structure of the gourd sheng is roughly the same as that of the sheng, consisting of a sheng bucket and a sheng tube. It is named after the Shengdou is made of empty gourd.

Yi people

The gourd-sheng of the Yi nationality spreads in a wide area, mostly with five or six pipes. In some areas, wooden or copper Sheng buckets are also used. The Sheng bucket is generally about 25 cm long from the mouthpiece. Common in Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province is the eight-tube gourd Sheng, which uses a bamboo spring and connects a thicker bamboo tube at the gourd handle as a mouthpiece. Bass gourd sheng from Chuxiong Prefecture, Yunnan Province, the first tube is 79.5 cm high and 1.3 cm in inner diameter, the second tube is 64 cm high and 1.2 cm in inner diameter, the third tube is 55.5 cm high and 1.1 cm in inner diameter, and the fourth tube is 48 cm high , the inner diameter is 1.1 cm, the fifth tube is 41 cm high and 1 cm in inner diameter, the gourd is 31.5 cm long and 5.5 cm high, the gourd handle plus the blowpipe is 23 cm long, the mouthpiece is 0.9 cm in diameter, and the sound hole is 0.5 cm in diameter. It is particularly unique: a short and thick bamboo tube is placed horizontally on the upper end of the bass pipe as a resonator, which can make the sound more round and bright. The tenor gourd sheng from Baoshan, Yunnan Province, the first tube is 39.5 cm high and 1.3 cm in inner diameter, the second tube is 33.5 cm high and 1.5 cm in inner diameter, the third tube is 29.3 cm high and 1.3 cm in inner diameter, and the fourth tube is high 24.5 cm, inner diameter 1.3 cm, the fifth pipe is 21 cm high, 1.5 cm inner diameter, the gourd is 10 cm long, and the blow pipe is 24 cm long.

Lahu

The gourd-sheng of the Lahu ethnic group is popular in the Lahu cottages on both sides of the Lancang River in Yunnan Province. Most of them have five pipes. The pipe is made of wild green bamboo or bamboo. Among them, the high-pitched gourd pipe has a height of 15.5 cm, 15 cm and 10.5 cm, respectively. cm, 10.5 cm, 9 cm, the length of the gourd handle is 8 cm, the length of the blowpipe is 25 cm, the reed is cut with golden bamboo, and the pipe is sealed with beeswax, which is the same as the gourd Sheng of the Yi nationality in Daliangshan. In the Ximeng and Lancang areas, there is a smaller high-pitched gourd sheng, with a height of less than 15 cm, which is often carried in the pocket when visiting friends or working in the mountains. Lahu bass gourd Sheng, the highest pipe is 90 cm, the inner diameter is 1.1 cm, and the distance from the sound hole to the bottom hole is 10 cm. The music includes "Going Out Tune", "Harvest Dance" and so on. 

Wa

The gourd Sheng of the Wa nationality is popular in Ximeng, Cangyuan and its adjacent areas in Yunnan Province. In Ximeng's gourd sheng, there is a kind of two gourds that are butted on the highest pipe as a resonator. Each gourd has a circular sound hole, which can not only increase the volume, but also have a better shape. Very beautiful. Often used for dance accompaniment. The music includes "New Year's Tunes" and so on.
