In 2015, the first Shanghai Conservatory of Music Sheng Art Week was held in Shanghai, which not only built a platform for Sheng art exhibition and international exchange, but also achieved fruitful results, which greatly promoted the vigorous development of Sheng art. Seven years later, the second Shanghai Conservatory of Music Sheng Art Week kicked off on November 21, 2022 as scheduled.
The Sheng Art Week is hosted by Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and organized by the Department of Ethnic Music of Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the Organizing Committee of the Sheng Art Week of Shanghai Conservatory of Music. The Art Week is rooted in the characteristics and accumulation of the Sheng major of Shangyin Folk Music Department, continues the high standard and open mind of the previous Sheng Art Week, brings together performers, educators, composers and theorists at home and abroad, and constructs a platform for the exhibition and exchange of Sheng art with an international perspective with four major concerts and two peak academic forums, which has achieved extensive attention and fruitful practical and theoretical achievements. In addition to Weng Zhenfa, the distinguished professor of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and Li Yuxiang, the president of Shanghai Sheng Research Association, the consultants of this art week in Shanghai, Yang Shoucheng, the professor of Central Conservatory of Music, Li Guanglu, the professor of China Conservatory of Music, Sun You, the professor and Chen Renjie, the teacher of Shenyang Conservatory of Music, Shao Chunliang, Liu Yu, and Yan Jingsheng, the professors of Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Mu Nan, the associate professor of Shandong Academy of Arts, and Song Yang, the actor of China Opera and Dance Theater, were invited, Liu Guanghui, an associate professor of Harbin Conservatory of Music, Yang Lei, an associate professor of Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, Shen Yujing, a teacher of Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, Zheng Yang, a sheng performer of Beijing National Orchestra, Liu Lihao, a sheng teacher of Xi'an Conservatory of Music, and other experts and scholars in the field of sheng performance and research participated.
On the evening of November 22, the opening ceremony of the second Shanghai Conservatory of Music Sheng Art Week and the "Sound of Free Springs" - the special concert of Zhong Zhiyue Sheng Concerto was held in the main hall of Jaguar Shanghai Symphony Concert Hall, opening the curtain of this art week. Zhong Zhiyue, associate professor of Sheng at Shanghai Conservatory of Music, joined hands with the Shanghai Opera House Symphony Orchestra, which was performed by Zhang Chengjie, and cellist Lu Yanmin and suona player Zhu Weilong to bring four different styles of Sheng concertos: Luo Mesuo's Sheng Hua~Evol, Zhao Lin's Du, Su Xiao's Tianqi, and Schneider's Yin and Yang. Zhong Zhiyue presented a highly standard "Sheng Yin" feast for the audience with superb technology and rigorous and delicate handling.
On the morning of November 23 and 24, two "Academic Summit Forums on Contemporary Sheng Performance Art and Creation" were held in the form of combination of online and offline. The forum has achieved fruitful results for two consecutive days, and has earnestly implemented the original intention of "contributing to the development of Sheng art".
In the afternoon and evening of November 23, two "Sheng Excellent New Works Exhibition Concerts" were staged in Bosi Yangtze River Artists Center, which is a highlight of this Sheng Art Week. The first concert in the afternoon presented excellent new Sheng works published in recent years or commissioned by Shanghai Conservatory of Music to create by composers at home and abroad. These works fully demonstrated the possibility of vigorous development and diversified presentation of the current Sheng works in terms of performance difficulty, work concept, creation techniques, performance style, etc. The second concert in the evening further reflected the discovery and promotion of new works of Sheng in this year's Sheng Art Week: as early as the beginning of the year, the organizing committee began the solicitation of new works and gained wide attention and participation. After selection by the judges, 8 excellent works created by teachers and students from Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Central Conservatory of Music and other institutions stood out from more than 50 works and made their world debut at the concert that night. A total of 20 works were performed in the two concerts, 12 of which were world premieres. It is the first time in recent years that the excellent new works of Sheng are presented in such a concentrated way. What's more, this new work is mainly played by young Sheng performers who graduated from or are studying in Shanghai Conservatory of Music. They have demonstrated the teaching achievements and stage style of Shangyin Sheng, and have obtained great training and growth in the rehearsal of new works.
On the evening of November 24, the closing concert of this Sheng Art Week was shown online. The repertoire of the closing concert has collected the representative works and debut works of various young performers. The online exhibition has enabled more audiences to appreciate the demeanor of young performers from various universities and orchestras, as well as the diversified and vigorous development of the current sheng art.
So far, the second Sheng Art Week has come to an end. With a professional, international and diversified perspective, this Sheng Art Week shows the world the unlimited possibilities of Sheng art in the future. Under the long-term cultivation of experts and professors such as Xu Chaoming, Weng Zhenfa and Wu Wei, Shangyinsheng has played a great role in promoting the development of Chinese and international sheng art. The construction of Shangyinsheng Art Week will continue, inherit and carry forward the excellent tradition of sheng art of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, gather high-quality academic resources around the world, consolidate the academic foundation of future sheng art development with high-quality performance, high-quality works and high vision research, and explore various paths for the development of sheng art.
