The legend of Huangni Drum was made to commemorate Pan Wang, the ancestor of the Yao people. In the historical book "Guoshan Bang" handed down by the Yao people from generation to generation, there is such a record: the ancestor of the Yao nationality, Pan Wang, was a heroic figure with both wisdom and courage. The head of the enemy leader was retrieved to protect the life and property of the tribe people. The king then married the three princesses to him and named him king. From then on, the people called him "Pan Wang".
After King Pan and the princess got married, they lived in the mountains and gave birth to six sons and six daughters. These are the descendants of the Yao people. One day, King Pan went up the mountain to hunt, but unfortunately he was knocked off the cliff by a goat and died. The sons and daughters found King Pan's body on a paulownia tree at the foot of the mountain. They were distraught, so they cut down the paulownia tree, sawed it into seven pieces, and made the drum body of a female drum and six male drums. The goat skin is peeled off to make the drumhead.
The reason why the yellow mud is pasted is that the sticky drum skin of the yellow mud can suppress the noise of the drum sound. This is an important discovery in the improvement of the sound of the drum in our early days.
The gongs and drums were played to mourn King Pan, and he beat the goat-skin drum face to relieve his grief and anger. This is the reason for beating the yellow mud drum and dancing the yellow mud drum when offering sacrifices to King Pan. This custom has been passed down from generation to generation.
Since then, whenever there is a funeral in Yaozhai, they will beat this kind of drum to show their condolences. Drums are divided into male and female. When the husband dies, the wife will play the female drum in front of the coffin and the son will play the male drum; when the wife dies, both the husband and the son will play the male drum. This has become a custom of the Yao family and has been passed down from generation to generation.
