Almost every Bai village in Yunlong has folk artists who play suona. In Bai people's agricultural celebrations, weddings and funerals, folk festivals and folk activities, suona playing is an indispensable part. In different festivals, activities and different environments and ceremonies, there are strict regulations on the use of suona music.
The Bai suona is mostly made by folk artists, and its shape and structure are roughly the same as those of the Han suona.
The tube body is mostly made of slender soft wood such as white pear, plum, catalpa, juniper, boxwood, rhododendron and other wild miscellaneous woods. The tapered tube body is about eight inches long, mostly flat rods, rarely bamboo rods, and the rods are engraved with striped circles for decoration. The upper part of the ferrule is about half an inch long. Because the ferrule is thickened to prevent rupture, the tube wall is cylindrical. The diameter of the inner bore at the upper end is generally 0.9 to 1 cm, and the diameter of the inner bore at the lower end is about 2 cm. The pipe body has seven sound holes, all of which are on the front of the pipe body. The obvious difference from the Han suona is that there are no back sound holes. There is no strict regulation on the distance between the sound holes, which is generally about 3 cm, and the hole distance between the fifth, sixth and seventh holes at the upper end is relatively small. During the audition, the relationship between the pitch and the interval of the sound sequence is generally adjusted by adjusting the bore diameter of the tube body. Bai nationality suona reed whistle (commonly known as whistle) is mostly made of mountain reeds growing in dams and ponds in mountainous areas. The core, air plate and bowl mouth are mostly made of brass and aluminum alloy. The core is about 5 cm long, and the folks call it "pot sign", but in fact it is a homonym for "passed air". The diameter of the mouth of the bowl is about 10 centimeters, and it is approximately conical and cylindrical, and there is a convex ball on the waist for decoration.
