The nose flute is a musical instrument with edge sound and chirp, so it is called the flute blowing through the nose. There is also a tear-jerking love story about the birth of the nose flute. Legend has it that a long time ago, a pair of young Li people fell in love at the foot of Wuzhi Mountain. Before getting married, the girl went to the betel nut garden to pick betel nut. She was found by the owner of the cave and arrested. The owner of the cave forced the girl to marry him. The girl refused and was locked up. The young man searched for ten days and ten nights, and finally found that the girl was locked in a small hole in the jungle. The two could not meet each other, and the young man had to sing and tease. When the master of the cave found out, he picked up the young man again, cut off his tongue, and sent him to a remote mountain forest. After a month, the young man appeared by the cave again. He chopped a section of white bamboo and blew out his pain and longing with his nose. The girl understood and was moved. Later, the young man was caught and executed by the master. Before his death, the trustee handed the nose flute to the girl. Soon, the girl escaped from the tiger's mouth and knelt in front of the young man's grave, distraught, and played the nose flute that the young man had played before his death. However, the girl was carrying a nose flute and slept in front of the young man's grave. Since then, the nose flute has been passed down from generation to generation.

In the Qing Dynasty, Zhang Qing wrote "Li Qi Ji Wen": "Unmarried men and women gather together in the wilderness at the turn of spring and summer, the men play the zither, the women play the nose flute, and sing the songs of Li. The first one is to order the coupling, and those who do not agree with each other do not dare to be strong.” It can be seen that the nose flute is a common musical instrument used by young Li people to express their love, and both men and women can play it. Whenever the night falls and the quiet Lijia village, there will be bursts of slender and quiet xiao sounds from time to time. This is the young man of the Li family who is calling his girlfriend, or the girl's answer to her boyfriend, or maybe a couple relying on him. Under the betel nut tree, they took turns blowing the nose flute to tell each other their love. In the Li family, the marriage is based on whether the nose flute is good or not, and the nose flute can be exchanged as a token of affection.
