Baxian Drum is a form of folk music spread in Shanyang County, Shangluo City. It originated in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. It is based on sacrificial drum music and incorporates various percussion melodies such as Shehuo Drum, Yangko Drum, Marching Drum, Yang Gong Drum, etc. It also absorbs artistic elements such as social fire, dragon lanterns, flower drums, fish drums, filial piety songs (yang gongs and drums), and yangko songs, showing strong local characteristics. It uses cowhide drum as the main musical instrument, accompanied by hairpins and gongs. Because the drum score is complicated and lively, it is like the eight immortals crossing the sea, each showing their magical powers, hence the name Baxiangu.
The Eight Immortals Drum has been included in the fourth batch of Shaanxi Province Intangible Cultural Heritage List. As a provincial intangible cultural heritage project, it has a large number of participants, distinctive artistic features, and a long history of inheritance. . The Eight Immortals drums are sonorous and powerful, with lively rhythm, combining the remoteness of southern drum music with the boldness of northern drum music. It not only expresses people's celebration of the harvest, but also pines people's yearning for the future.
