The three holes are fully closed to produce a sound, the left and right holes are opened to produce the c1 sound of the minor third above, the two holes are opened to produce the d1 sound, and the three holes are fully opened to the e1 sound. The local popular Di Lao Nor tunes are composed of four tones a, c1, d1, and e1.
Di Lao Nuo has a low pronunciation and a beautiful and soft tone. The roasted pottery Di Lao Nuo has a louder volume and brighter tone than the clay one, and can be used for solo performance. The players are all young men from the Yi family. They often play at night, and the sound is like crying and complaining, and it spreads far.
