The dragon head sanxian is mostly made by folk woodcarving craftsmen. Not only the dragon head is decorated with colorful paintings, but some also engraved patterns on the frame, making the Bai nationality dragon head sanxian not only a folk musical instrument that can be played, but also an exquisite handicraft for viewing and collection.

The sound box is mostly flat hexagonal, which is a typical traditional form, and there are also flat octagonal or flat round piano boxes, but there are fewer.

piano frame
The piano frame is made of six or eight pieces of mahogany, pear, walnut or other hardwoods spliced and glued together. There are square holes for inserting the piano rods up and down. The front of the piano frame is mostly made of thick cotton paper as the vibrating membrane surface.

This kind of tissue paper has a unique covering method. It is necessary to use relatively clear glutinous rice soup, and paste five to eight layers of tissue paper together. After drying in the shade, glue it to the front of the piano box. Under the influence of the climate, it collapses softly, and when it vibrates, it has both the flexibility of the leather surface and the firmness of the board surface.

Among the Bai people, there are also people who are covered with sheepskin or python skin.

There are many sound windows or openings on the back of the piano case. The size of the piano box is different. The larger one is 18 cm to 24 cm wide and 6 cm to 8 cm thick; the smaller one is 12 cm to 16 cm wide and 4 cm to 6 cm thick.

headstock
The headstock is made of peach wood, boxwood and other fine-textured woods. It bends back in a semicircle from the string groove. Most of the upper parts are carved with lifelike and large faucets. There are also a few heads with flat heads and no decorations. There are string grooves through the bottom, and three boxwood pegs on both sides (one on the left and two on the right) are engraved with stripes on the outside of the shaft, and the shaft is mostly inlaid with bone decorations.

piano bar
The piano bar is made of piano frame material, and it is a semi-circular cylindrical body, with a flat front and a round back. There is a mountain pass on the upper end. A bamboo or wooden bridge-shaped bridge is placed in the center of the membrane surface of the piano case. Zhang with three silk strings. The lower ends of the strings are tied to the tail post under the guitar case. Between the string groove and the tail post, there is a colorful silk strap, and two colorful silk tassels are attached to the upper end.
