The inch flute is a single-reed gas-sounding instrument of the Yi nationality. Named for its short body. The Yi language calls Mu Bimei, the Yi language "wood" means bamboo, and "bimei" means blowing, which means playing the flute. Popular in Yongren, Mouding and other places in Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province.
The body of the inch flute is made of mangosteen bamboo, the length of the tube is 7 cm, and the inner diameter of the tail is 0.8 cm. There are two kinds of shapes: one is imitated by Lu Lu, the tube head is left with a section, the tube tail is transparent, the tube wall near the bamboo section is thinned and flattened, and a 2 cm long reed is carved with the tongue facing up. There are three rectangular sound holes on the front of the pipe body, but they are not used for sound holes when playing. The other is made of a bamboo tube with a knotless head and transparent ends. Its size, cutting of the reeds and arrangement of the sound holes are the same as the previous one.
In recent years, professional musicians have made beneficial attempts to improve the inch flute. The reeds are installed on the back of the pipe body, which is convenient for playing, and the material of the reeds has been changed to make the sound more soft.
