In Liannan Yaozhai, Guangdong, the Pai Yao people have a traditional custom of loving music: they practice flute in May, suona in June, singing in July and August, bee drumming in September, and singing hall on October 16.
According to folklore, there are many pests in the fields in May, and blowing the flute in May can blow away the pests, so it is necessary to play the flute for a month. Whenever the green and yellow seasons in April and May do not meet, the Yao compatriots will play in the fields, playing against the ears of rice, hoping that the dealer will mature as soon as possible and look forward to a good harvest.
In the annual Yao Nationality's grandest song and dance festival, the Song and Dance Hall (also known as the Panwang Festival), various musical instruments are played in turn, and musicians from each village also perform with the May flute.
