Among the Jingpo people, the turen is a favorite wind instrument for children and young people. Whether it is cattle herding on the hillside, walking in the forest, or young men and women falling in love, the melodious sound of turen is always accompanied. The elderly also often play to entertain themselves.

In addition to using it for solo performance, the Jingpo people also use it to accompany various folk songs and folk dances, such as "Love Songs", "Cow-fleshing" and "Folk Songs", etc., and can ensemble with elephant-foot drums, cymbals and other instruments. It has a wide range of applications. Turen is closely related to agricultural production. Whenever the rice is yellow and ripe, Jingpo people play it to disperse birds, but not at home or in the village. Among the Lisu people in Yongde County, Lincang area, both men and women play Tu Ren, especially girls, and there are no restrictions on playing occasions. They can be played at home or inside and outside the village. In the cottage, it is usually played in the mountains and fields outside the village, but in the event of a funeral, it can be played at the deceased's home to express condolences.
