Digging and guzheng use different levels of production methods. There is no difference between digging a zither and a guzheng, because digging a zither is also a kind of guzheng, but it is a guzheng made by the ancient method of digging, and now most of the zithers on the market are folded zithers.
"Dig the zheng" is a traditional Chinese ancient method of digging the whole process. This kind of guzheng is made by the whole digging process, which is a kind of respect for the trees. For such a guzheng, it is necessary to select an old tree that is more than 40 years old, dig out the whole piece of paulownia and cut it out, shape it and excavate it without an inner frame, and go through at least 5 years of natural air-drying before it can be sold.
The sound quality of the guzheng is better, pure, and has the taste of the guqin. The real name of this guzheng is also relatively long, and it can generally be used for thirty or even fifty years.
Most of today's guzheng are "folded-faced zheng". This kind of guzheng is more common in thin version. It is made of pine wood inner frame, plus lower soundboard and sandalwood/mahogany/imitation mahogany and other trimmings and finishing materials and panels on both sides. The panels are spliced together, and the panels are baked. After the panels are extruded, the physical properties of the panels will change, so the pronunciation of such a guzheng is definitely not as good as that of digging a zither.
Of course, it is not that the guzheng has a good sound quality by adopting the production process of digging the zheng. This depends on the production technology.
