"Spring Festival Overture" uses Yangko and northern Shaanxi folk songs as materials, and adopts the creation method of Chinese pentatonic scale. "Yangko" is a representative form of folk song and dance in northern China. Dancers usually dress up as various characters and dance with props such as fans, handkerchiefs, and colorful silks in their hands.
The performance is divided into three parts: crossing the street, large field and small field. Crossing the street is some simple dance movements performed by the Yangko team according to the rhythm of the music when the Yangko team moves on the street; the big field is a large group dance that is hot and red, often out of various complicated formations; the small field is performed by two or three people. A small dance or song-and-dance show with a simple plot.
Through the proper use of Yangko tones and rhythm, the song creates a strong sense of rhythm, showing the lively scene of people singing and dancing, gongs and drums in unison. The composition of the whole piece is a trilogy structure with reproduction, consisting of three parts, and there is an introduction containing two themes in the front.
