Folk opera Xianbanqiang Nationality: Han Nationality: Shaanxi Province
Guzheng: Song Zhendong
Xianbanqiang, is one of the local operas in Shaanxi, according to legend, originated in the Song Dynasty, popular in Qian County, Xianyang, Zhouzhi and other places, because of the use of high-pitched hard strings and boards as the main Musical Instruments, for a long time in the way of "through the curtain to tell the book" shadow puppet performance. Xianbanqiang's repertoire is mostly based on historical stories and folklore. Its music and singing are common with the characteristics of "bitter sound" in Shaanxi folk music. The lyrics are gentle and easy to understand, and they are good at expressing the personalities and emotions of different characters in the drama, revealing a strong Guanzhong customs.
Performer Qu Yun used Xianbanqiang as the main material, and added elements of Shaanxi folk music such as Qinqiang, to create this difficult solo guzheng that combines traditional kneading techniques with modern rapid fingering. At the beginning of the piece, the soft and bright guzheng emits a clear string sound that changes like ripples spreading in a pool of water. Later, the rhythm of the music changes to a calm and slow, crooning guzheng, like a relaxed storyteller, accompanied by a moonlit candle, telling a legendary story. At the end, the music returns to the cheerful and lively allegro rhythm, and is finally wrapped up in an auspicious and joyful atmosphere, which makes people appreciate the innovative style of traditional Chinese music in the process of contemporary inheritance.
