Folk Music Ethnic Group: Kyrgyz Region: Xinjiang
Kumuzi: Ahematibek Tolan
There is a saying among the Kyrgyz people that goes, 'The one who accompanies you in life and death is the Kumuzi zither.'. This ancient plucked instrument, unique to the Kyrgyz ethnic group, is also translated as "Huo Bu Si" or "He Bi Si", meaning "beautiful instrument" in their language. Whether it's epic or love songs, they embrace this Kumuzi and sing or duet, infusing emotions of joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness into the strings. From the Yenisei River to the north and south of the Tianshan Mountains, from the Ili River Valley to the Pamir Plateau, they sing for thousands of years. It was originally made of iron and once played the battlefield battle song together with the war drum called "Duowulebas". To this day, the sound of the strings still faintly echoes the speed and momentum of the fast horses, bows, knives, and maneuvers.
This Kumuzi music has a faint sense of pride and eagerness from the parents as they watch their children grow up day by day, becoming strong and robust, and deeply experiencing the feeling of time passing by suddenly. They inject hope and education into the Kumuzi strings, which sometimes relax, sometimes rush, sometimes stir, and sometimes leisurely. The notes are dense and the rhythm is strong and vigorous, like the father's strictness and urging, the light and gentle parts, like the mother's gentle care and warning. It rushes forward, and behind the strings, there seem to be countless ancestors' faces and music silently passed down, injecting tradition and virtue, the courage and magnanimity of heroes into the spirit of the younger generations of the nation.
