"Phoenix Spreads Wings" is a sheng solo piece composed by Dong Hongde and Hu Tianquan in 1956. Phoenix was called auspicious bird in ancient times. It is said to be the king of birds, symbolizing beauty and happiness. The music adopts the tone of Shanxi Bangzi and uses various performance skills of Sheng to vividly depict the various graceful postures of Phoenix and express the yearning for a better life. This piece won the gold medal in the 6th World Youth Festival Folk Music Competition in 1957. Accompanied by pipa.
This piece is also the first sheng solo piece written in mainland China since the founding of the People's Republic of China. Therefore, Hu Tianquan is known as "the father of modern Sheng".
