"Brother of the Red Army is Back", a Banhu Solo composed by Zhang Changcheng and Yuan Ye in 1958. It is also a relatively innovative work in the creation of national instrumental music since the founding of the People's Republic of China.
This piece is adapted from the music of Shaanxi local opera "Wanwanqiang". The music vividly depicts the scene of the Red Army returning in triumph, being warmly welcomed by the masses, and embarking on the journey again. "Wanwanqiang" is a kind of shadow play popular in Hualiang, the northern foot of Huashan Mountain, Shaanxi Province. It is named after the bowl (shaped like a small bronze bell) as the main percussion instrument, and its music is euphemistic and pleasant.
The theme of the music is "Brother of the Red Army is back", showing the jubilant scene of the people in northern Shaanxi who have experienced hardships welcoming the victory of the Anti-Japanese Red Army, and expressing the deep affection between the army and the people. The piece was originally a banhu piece, but was gradually transplanted by performers into erhu, violin and other instrumental pieces, with different playing styles.
