Birds in the Sky is an erhu solo composed by modern Chinese musician Liu Tianhua. The first draft was written in 1918, and it was finalized ten years later. The title is taken from Tang Wangwei's poem "Empty mountains do not see people, but hear people's voices" ("Lu Chai"). In this piece, Liu Tianhua creatively uses the three-stringed opera-style imitation technique to depict the beautiful artistic conception of deep mountains and valleys, and the chirping of birds. It is a very vivid work. In 1993, he won the "Chinese 20th Century Music Classics Award" by the Chinese National Culture Promotion Association.
