Zhang Shengqun's shakuhachi playing "Virtual Bell" is from the album "Music Book: Shakuhachi - Zhang Shengqun".
When learning shakuhachi, the first piece of music that is usually learned is Xuling. Xuling can be said to be the foundation of the original shakuhachi. In the "Biography of Xuduo", it is written that there was a Zen master Puhua in the Tang Dynasty, and his speech and behavior were very different. He is frivolous, likes to howl loudly, dances with his hands, holds a big duo in his hand, and sings in his mouth: "The bright head comes to the bright head, the dark head comes to the dark head, the whirlwind strikes from all directions, and the void comes to fight." Later, he passed away. There was no physical body at the time, only Duo Yin was heard faintly disappearing in the air. At that time, there was a man named Zhang Bo. Because he admired Chan Master Puhua, he used a bamboo pipe to imitate Chan Master Puhua's Duo sound and made a Xuduo piece. It was later called the virtual bell. In the Southern Song Dynasty, a Japanese Master Xindi Juoxin came to Huguo Temple to study Buddhism, and learned the shakuhachi playing and a shakuhachi song called "Xu Ling" from his fellow lay Buddhist Zhang Shen. Later, Master Xindi Juoxin Returning to Japan, I brought back the shakuhachi and this shakuhachi song. This story had a great impact on that era. The repertoire developed by Shakuhachi during this period was mainly solo, with a calming style of Zen wabi-sabi, and a more natural and simple timbre.

Shakuhachi (pinyin: Chǐ bā), an ancient Chinese traditional musical instrument, was introduced to Japan during the Tang and Song Dynasties. Made of bamboo, with cinnabar mixed with lacquer on the inside to fill the (ground) incision, it is now five holes (the first four and the last one). Vast, but also can show the ethereal, quiet artistic conception.
